Greenfields was founded by a group of local parents following a survey amongst residents of Hyson Green and Forest Fields in 1985, which highlighted the need for affordable, community-based care. There were no tax credits available to support childcare and learning institutions did not offer childcare to their students, so affordable childcare was the main barrier to lone parents and families on low income being able to access employment, training and education. The centre started caring for children and delivering community-based training to parents in 1989 and was opened officially by HRH Diana, Princess of Wales in 1992. It has shown a steady growth in the number of families it supports and the range of services offered and now operates from four sites across the city.
